Gurkha soldier killed in suicide bomb attack

A Gurkha who lived locally has been killed in Afghanistan when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a market in Gereshk.

 


The Gurkha soldier based at Shorncliffe has been  named as Corporal Kumar Purja Pun. He lived in Dover with his wife and two young daughters.

Cpl Pun, 30, who served in the 1st Battalion of The Royal Gurkha Rifles, together with a Royal Military policeman with 173 Provost Company, 3rd Regiment, died when the bomber on a motorbike blew himself up at a market.

Twenty-one locals also died.

The deaths take the British toll in Afghanistan to 157 since 2001.

The next of kin have been informed..
