Couple in their 80s robbed by bogus water board workers

Have your say!

Dear Editor,

As you may know I have tried to champion the fight against the vile crimes of conning elderly or vulnerable people out of their savings and property by whatever means.

Imagine my horror when only last Friday I was contacted by my in-laws who are in their very late eighties and both disabled and in poor health, to be told that 'bogus Water Board workers' had tricked their way into their house claiming to have been contacted about a water leak in their home.

The usual thing then occurred; an older man kept my father-in-law engaged in the kitchen whilst a younger man ransacked upstairs.

It was only after an extensive search that we realised a jewellery box containing all my mother-in-law's jewellery was stolen.

This was everything she had kept since she was a young lady.

This story is to illustrate the need to be constantly aware of the threat of bogus callers. Having over the weekend witnessed the distress that this type of offence can cause.

Once again I would like to ask everyone to raise the level of vigilance and support for the elderly and vulnerable within their communities.

I did my best and failed on this occasion so I know how difficult this task is but I urge you to continue trying.

PC Mick Wright
County Watch Liaison Officer
