Folkestone baby seal campaigners jubilant over Russian clubbing ban

Have your say!

Dear Editor,

This spring, newborn baby seals will no longer look directly at their killers, who have in previous years used their bloody clubs to smash the fragile skulls of the white-coated pups in the White Sea region of Russia.

This method of murder does not damage the valuable fur.

European Animal Welfare (EAW) set itself up sixteen years ago to protest against this barbarianism.

In all the years that supporters of EAW have campaigned, not a single penny of donations was taken from the general public, and all those involved can be proud of that, and know in their hearts that their time spent during all those years of protest have not been wasted.

In March this year, Vladimir Putin made the announcement that newborn baby seals up to one-year old will no longer be clubbed to death, and has admitted the cruel practice should have been banned long ago.

Once again the white ice flows are no longer running red with the blood and crimson remains of these innocent pups.

Protest outside Downing Street

Former Kent Messenger reporter and Hawkinge Gazette editor, Sue Scott, in the very early days working at the Folkestone Extra Sandgate Road office never turned down EAW’s request for badly needed publicity for the plight of the baby seals.

EAW will always remain indebted for the publicity on their behalf, first brought to Sue Scott’s attention in March 1991 and exposed by the Independent national newspaper later that year.

EAW and its supporters can now breathe a huge sigh of relief, and can recuperate after all their efforts over many years.

The Right Honourable Michael Howard MP will be very relieved to see the back of us, I’m sure!! He made sure the bugle call of EAW was heard through the corridors of power.

Our sincere thanks must also go to Mark Watts, former MEP, whose actions were louder than words, as well as Christopher Jackson, his predecessor who played a pivotal role in the early days.

We must also thank the public of Folkestone and surrounding areas who responded so positively to our cause and should share in our delight that commonsense has prevailed.

Once again, thank you to The Hawkinge Gazette and its online readers.

Robert Mouland
