English Channel collision report finds 'no lookout present on either bridge'

A report published on a Channel collision involving two vessels passing through the Dover Strait has said a "complacent attitude" to keeping watch contributed to the accident.

The cargo vessel Scot Isles lost 60 tons of marine gas oil in the sea in the incident with the Egyptian bulk carrier Wadi Halfa.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said the Scot Isles watchkeeper did not detect Wadi Halfa but although the Wadi Halfa's watchkeeper saw Scot Isles, despite taking evasive action, could not prevent the collision.

The Scot Isles was heading from Rochester, in Kent, to Antwerp when the collision took place in the early hours of 20 October 2008.

"No lookout was present on either bridge at the time of the collision, and the vessels' radars and other bridge equipment were not used effectively" the MAIB report said.
