Twitchers and photographers have been arriving in their hundreds to catch a glimpse of a rare visitor to Romney Marsh.

A crested lark which arrived unnoticed earlier this week was identified on Wednesday and crowds have been flocking to the beach at Dungeness ever since.

It has been reported that there could be as many as 1,500 people turning up at the weekend.

A number of the birds, which are common on the continent, breed near Calais on the French coast, but they seldom choose to fly over water.

The crested lark looks very similar to a skylark, but with a more pronounced orange underside, rounded wings and and a shorter tail.
