Battle of Britain Museum re-opens - (Photo)

Out & About

The Kent Battle of Britain Museum, Hawkinge, re-opens on Good Friday 2009 and celebrates its twenty-eighth season at Hawkinge and its forty-third since being established.

On Easter Sunday and Monday the Museum are very pleased to announce that we will be joined by members of the Folkestone Home Guard / Home Front Living History Group. They will be on site between 10.00am and 3.00pm, each day, showing the way of life in England during 1940 either in the Home Guard, under Military Service or on the Home Front.

This ties in very nicely with the opening of one of the Museums new displays; the '1940 '“ Dig For Victory Garden'. Both the new '1940 '“ Dig For Victory Garden' Display and having the Living History Group on site will help to for fill one of the Museums main aims in the education of younger generations of this important period of our history.

Also now with the 'credit crunch' being so often in the news these days, many of the 1940's principles are coming back in to fashion such as 'grow your own' (dig for victory) and 'make do and mend'!

The members of the 'Folkestone Home Guard / Home Front Group' have kindly offered their time freely to help publicize the Museum and all the work carried out by the volunteers and enthusiasts to commemorate the Battle of Britain . Their hope is that this event will attract additional publicity and visitors over the weekend, and therefore raise much needed funds to help pay for the ongoing development and maintenance of the Museum.

Many improvements have been carried out by the volunteers and enthusiasts at the Museum over the winter months. Not only critical maintenance with the replacement of two roofs, paid for by donations from the general public, but also many new and improved displays.

The Museum is open from Good Friday to 30th September, Tuesdays to Sundays 10am to 4pm (last entry by 3pm). We are closed Mondays except on Bank Holidays.

Have they relaxed the no photography rule at this museum that they started some years ago, I must say carrying a camera dosen't make you a thief and for the museum to tar everyone with the same brush is not a way to welcome nor encourage visitors.
