A pensioner driving a mobility scooter, which has a top speed of just 8mph, was rescued  by police after worried drivers raised the alarm after spotting the vehicle travelling on the hard shoulder of a motorway.

Police rushed to the scene on Tuesday afternoon (21 April) near to junction 11a of the M20  near Folkestone and found an 89-year-old pensioner who had mistakenly ended up on the busy motorway.

The man was uninjured and he and his mobility scooter were returned home by police.

The incident comes just weeks after 90-year-old Stanley Murphy was rescued from the 70mph A27 in Shoreham, West Sussex.

Mobility scooters are dangerous

Should we ban these vehicles from the roads? There doesn't appear to be any kind of licence required to drive one and I am frankly fearful for those driving them. Their top speed of about 8mph is hardly fast enough to use on roads, but equally dangerous if you happen to be confronted with one of them on the footpath. I'd like to know how the law stands. I'm sure if it were a younger person driving one, there would be far less tolerance from the authorities.
