A man's body was recovered from the base of cliffs near Folkestone today (12 April) after a fellow walker reported to Police that he had slipped over the edge.

The man, in his mid 30s, died after falling nearly 300ft from a cliff top at Capel-le-Ferne.

He is thought to have slipped and fallen as he walked with friends at about lunchtime.

The Kent air ambulance searched the area, but was unable to find the missing man on the cliffs but Coastguard Rescue Teams from Folkestone and Deal found him at the foot of the three-hundred-foot cliffs a short time later.

Fire service and Coastguard teams moved the man to a more accessible area and a helicopter from RAF Watisham, which had joined the search, airlifted him to the top of the cliffs.

A doctor from the air ambulance pronounced the man dead at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Kent Police said the death was being treated as an accident.

The owner of a holiday park which is sited on the cliff top said the man fell from her land and was believed to be Russian.

Speaking to the BBC, owner of the Varne Ridge Holiday Park, Evelyn Frantzeskou said: "It was right in front of my house. There's a little slope you can walk down but I think he just slipped right off.

"We just can't believe it."
