NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH - LATEST NEWS

Country Eye and Neighbourhood Watch have issued the following warning:-

Thefts of Ammonium Nitrate and Diesel

Concerns about the safe storage of ammonium nitrate (AN)remain. Terrorists worldwide continue to use this substance as the preferred explosive.

In December last year there were two incidents in Kent where barns had been entered and large numbers of bags had been slashed, spilling the prills. They appeared to be acts of vandalism, however, when such a quantity of bags are slashed it is difficult to tell if any AN has been removed.

At one of the sites a quantity of red diesel was stolen the previous day. Diesel mixed with AN becomes Anfo, which is a viable explosive. It transpired that diesel had also been stolen from a nearby farm at the second incident.

On Saturday 28 February 2008 another incident occurred where a bag of AN was slashed on another farm. It has been established that between 50kg and 100kg of AN was taken. In addition diesel was taken from a nearby vehicle.

It is now clear that there have been a series of related AN and diesel thefts across Kent. Can you please be vigilant, and ensure that your stocks are as secure as they can be. Advice can be obtained from www.secureyourfertiliser.gov.<WBR>uk

Report any theft or damage immediately.

Terrorist attack planners carry out extensive research, visiting sites, photographing and filming.

Should you or your staff be suspicious of any activity, please ring 999 if the activity is continuing, or Kent Police on 01622 690690 if it is reported to you later by staff.
