Animal dramas keep harbour police busy

Dover Harbour Board police had a busy month in February with animals which were lost, injured or smuggled into the UK.

A cat called Billy was saved a long journey by security officers who selected a Polish truck for a security search prior to boarding a ferry and discovered the frightened animal inside. A telephone number on Billy’s collar revealed he was from Cheshire, from where the thankful owner journeyed to Dover to collect him.

The dock police also rescued George, a West Highland terrier, that had fallen 200 ft down the cliffs to land on a security fence above the docks.

They were also called upon to look after two dogs being smuggled into the country by a Lithuanian, who had sedated the animals before concealing them behind the wooden panelling of a horsebox. He is now facing possible prosecution for cruelty and for an offence under animal health legislation.
