Work has begun to create a new and exciting adventure play area at Brabner Park recreation ground in Folkestone.

Digging will start and clear the way for a range of equipment including a zip wire, balance pole and climbing net, basket swing, monkey bars, and climbing frame.

It is just one of the projects funded by the Big Lottery following a successful bid by Shepway District Council in 2007 to create new play opportunities for young people.

Successful play sessions are held throughout the district during the school holidays and the funding is also helping to pay for a new play area at Fairfield Recreation Ground in New Romney.

Cllr Carole Waters, Cabinet Member for Sports and Culture, said the new adventure play area at Brabner Park and the project at Fairfield Recreation Ground – which also is supported with a £3,000 grant from New Romney Town Council – were expected to be completed by May.

“These two projects were an important part of our bid for Big Lottery funding. Both are very different, but much-needed. The adventure area at Brabner Park aims to give young people the chance to take risks, be adventurous and test themselves on some challenging equipment.

“The play area at New Romney is designed to help children of all abilities play together. Pupils at St Nicholas’ School come up with some ideas after they saw a drama presentation which showed how difficult it can be for disabled children to play alongside side able-bodied children.”
