German wind developer WPD announced last week that it has submitted a bid to develop a 1.35GW project in the zone designated for offshore wind development in the English Channel.

The consortium of WPD and Clipper Windpower propose using Clipper's 10MW "Britannia" turbine.

Turbines sited near Hastings could generate up to 1.35GW of power.

The "Hastings Zone" is among nine zones designated by the Crown Estate, the owner of most of the UK seabed, as a good area for offshore wind farms to be developed in Round Three of its leasing programme.

WPD managing director Achim Berge said: "Our consortium bid marks the UK market entry of one of Europe's most experienced wind power companies, WPD, with Clipper Windpower's UK-based wind turbine technology, strengthening the future of UK offshore wind generation."

Clipper Wind is already planning to develop its 10MW wind turbines at a facility in the North East of England, which could become the world's largest wind power device.
