A man from Hawkinge who dislikes Christmas and only buys presents for close family and hides from carol singers by turning off his lights has been chosen to select Christmas cracker jokes for a major High Street store.

Department store Debenhams called on Martyn Battrick to choose the jokes for their next year's Christmas crackers after the Hawkinge web designer had told the store his biggest gripes according to a story in today's Sunday Express (6 December) which dubbed him Mr Grumpy.

He reportedly said: "Any joke that makes me laugh is going to have to be pretty funny because I have as much seasonal cheer as an EastEnders Christmas special."
