Streetlight storm comes to Deal Pier

Out & About

An illuminating artwork that will see lights along Deal Pier flicker in time with lightning strikes as they happen live all over the world, is launching on Monday (21 December).

The artwork, called Streetlight Storm, is by exciting contemporary artist Katie Paterson.

Lightning signals are received by antenna on the pier from as far away as the North Pole and North Africa, and translated into light.

As the pattern of the lightning strikes changes, so the pier lights change to show the power and drama of the storms.

The artwork will be switched on at 4.30pm on Deal Pier on 21 December. It will run until 30 January 2010, during the hours of darkness and the pier’s opening hours, with lights on from around 5pm-10pm Sunday to Thursday, and all night Friday and Saturday.

The artwork is supported by Vauxhall Motors and the Albion Gallery, in partnership with Turner Contemporary and Whitstable Biennale. It has been set up on Deal Pier with support from Dover District Council.
