An area of countryside near Dover is to be transformed by removing electricity power lines in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

EDF Energy Networks is investing £380,880 in a project to remove 1.5miles of high voltage overhead power lines from part of St Margaret’s at Cliffe close to the famous Frontline Britain Trail.

Underground cables have been installed using specialist machinery, to minimise disturbance to the landscape and the removal of the power lines is scheduled to begin today (16 December)

Tim Owen, from Kent Downs AONB, said: “The landscape here is open and exposed, with large rolling fields surrounded by a network of hedges. Removal of these lines will greatly enhance the character of the area. It has also been another great opportunity to enhance some of Kent’s finest landscape.”

Some of the power lines which are coming down are on National Trust land. Simon Ovenden, the National Trust Property Manager for the area, says: “Many people enjoy the simple pleasures that a walk in the countryside offers. We are delighted that this wonderful place will be even more enhanced by this work.”
