Hawkinge Football Pavilion gets the go ahead despite protests

The £¾million Football Pavilion at the Hawkinge football ground is to go ahead and work could start early in the New Year.

There was some opposition to the plans, which had the support of Hawkinge Parish Council, and the application was called in and heard before the Development Control Committee of Shepway Council last night (3 November).

A resident spoke in front of the Committee against the plans. Both Shepway Cllr David Godfrey and Parish Council Chairman Cllr David Callahan spoke in support of the project.

After a half-hour debate, they voted unanimously to support the application under officer recommendations.

Following the meeting Cllr Godfrey spoke with the residents who were opposed to the plans and will be arranging a meeting with them to discuss and hopefully resolve the concerns they have.

Speaking later, Cllr Callahan said: "I am delighted we can now go ahead with the grant application and all being well, work should commence early in the New Year.

"The Parish Council recognise the concerns of the residents and will do everything in our power to ensure their lives are not disturbed."

To give credit where due Parish Councillors also met with opposing residents after the meeting and it was Cllr Tony Hutt's suggestion to arrange a meeting with residents which I am invited to attend.
