Norfolkline buoyant despite economic downturn with 2.5million passengers in 2009

Ferry operator Norfolkline continues to buck the downturn as it looks set to carry 800,000 cars this year between Dover and Dunkirk, with two and a half million passengers carried.

The IRN Research figures show the operator gaining market share.

The increase in bookings represents growth in the Dover car ferry market from 4 percent in 2004, to 28 percent year to date in 2009.

The company has said this growth puts it in a strong position for the rest of the year.

Chris Newey, General Manager Passenger Services, English Channel, said its success could be attributed to its “brand new ships”, its dedicated decks for freight and tourist passengers and the fact that Dunkirk is a less congested terminal than Calais, “allowing customers to board and disembark quickly and easily”.

Norfolkline operates up to 24 ferry crossings between Dover and Dunkirk each day.
