Dog owners walking their pets in Hawkinge warned - clear up or face ban

Dogs could be banned from Hawkinge Cemetery unless dog owners clean up their act.

The warning comes from Shepway Council following complaints about the amount of dog excrement found in the cemetery - and particular around the war memorial.

Dog Warden, Karyl Rimmer, cemetery supervisor Brian Clark and groundsman Dale Bryant had to clear away piles of the stuff to make sure the memorial was clean for Remembrance Day on Sunday.

"Don't people have any respect? Allowing dogs to foul graves is bad enough but to let them do it on the memorial is disgusting. What a way to treat our heroes," said Karyl.

Karyl is stepping up her patrols of the cemetery but says catching owners is not always easy.

"They are not going to let their dogs foul while I am there and they might even clear up any mess. But all the time there is no deterrent they are just going to carry on. It's a case of avoiding being caught rather than behaving like any decent human being and clearing up because it's the right thing to do. It must be so distressing for people visiting the graves of their loved ones."

Cllr William Richardson, Cabinet Member for Technical and Environmental Health, said he would prefer to shame bad owners into clearing up after their dogs than introduce a ban, but it might have to be considered.

"It would be very sad if people who visit graves with their dogs couldn't take their pets with them. However we are getting extremely frustrated by the number of irresponsible owners and if the situation doesn't improve we might have to look at banning dogs - except guide dogs - completely."

Owner's not picking up their dogs mess is totally irresponsible
by A Responsible Dog Owner
on Nov 26, 2009

As a dog owner myself, I totally agree that owner's not picking up their dogs mess, where ever it is, is totally irresponsible. However, I do have some issues with the way that this is being reported.

1. Why can't a proper dog exercise area be provided in Hawkinge, I’m aware that there are a number of these in Folkestone? Apart from the empty fields at the back of the cemetery, where can responsible dog owners exercise their pets?

2. You can’t ban everyone, because of the bad behaviour of a few! Should we ban everyone from driving, because there are a number of people who drink & drive?

3. There are many other disrespectful things that are going on in the cemetery. I have often had to dodge motorbikes and quad bikes when walking through the area. The fields are often littered with discarded beer cans & bottles, broken bikes etc.. In the summer people have camped in the field, leaving their rubbish behind and scorched areas from the fires. Fireworks litter the area after Guy Fawkes Night - why aren't these issues tackled in the same way?

To be honest, I can't see the issue with exercising my dogs (off their leads) in the backfield, behind the crematorium – this area is out of sight of the graves. I do agree that I should retain control my dogs and ensure that I pick up their mess. But this should be the case wherever I walk my dogs. Maybe the dog licence should be re-introduced.
