The box is used in one scene by Christopher Plummer, playing Squadron Leader Colin Harvey, when he speaks to his wife Maggie, played by Susannah York.

Local residents and War veterans who remember the scene outside The Jackdaw pub in Denton are campaigning to save it.

Hundreds of film fans and veterans visit the Jackdaw every year, although in the film it should have been called the Red Lion. It wasn't until the 50s that the pub was renamed The Jackdaw.

Landlady, Helen Brown is quoted saying that local people were outraged at the move to knock down the phone box.

"It is a very much a part of the village a real local landmark," she said.

A Dover Council spokesman stated: "We must stress that these plans are from BT.

"Dover District Council has responded to BT to inform them of a request to adopt six phone boxes, following responses from Parish Councils that they wished to 'adopt', and a decision to object to the removal of the phone box from Denton.

"Our records also show that the Denton box is listed and Listed Building Consent would be needed to remove it."
