75-year-old former Formula One and world motorbike champion John Surtees yesterday (17 November) became the first person to drive a private car through the channel tunnel, but averaged just 20mph.

John made the 31 mile, ninety minute trip in an electric-powered Ginetta sports car as part of the annual Beaujolais Wine Run.

Only service vehicles have previously been allowed through the tunnel, but an exception was made to mark the 15th anniversary of its opening.
