Eight hand guns and 200 rounds of ammunition  were found by customs officers hidden inside a lorry arriving at Dover.

The discovery, which also included 9,600 cigarettes, was made by UK Border Agency (UKBA) officers searching a vehicle which arrived at the port on a ferry from Calais on Tuesday (10 November).

Lithuanian national Vitalijus Tauskela, 48, was arrested and subsequently charged with attempted smuggling.

Tauskela, appeared at Folkestone Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (November 11) and was remanded in custody to appear at Dover Magistrates' Court on December 10.

Malcolm Bragg, HM Revenue and Customs' assistant director of criminal investigation, said: "HMRC investigators and their UK Border Agency colleagues are determined to stop weapons and any other smuggled goods reaching the UK's streets."
