A fire on Romney Marsh has claimed the life of a teenage boy after he was trapped in a blazing house.

Fire crews were called to a house in  Lade Fort Crescent, Lydd-on-Sea, shortly after 9.00am today (4 October) when a blaze broke out in a bedroom.

A mother and her five children were inside the house at the time but despite attempts to dampen down the flames, the fire quickly took hold.

The woman and four children escaped but her son remained inside.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus tried to rescue the 17-year-old boy but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police and fire service investigators remain at the scene and are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
