PGA professional Charles Whiting from Hythe has reached a special milestone after celebrating his 100th birthday.

Charles was born in 1909, the year J H Taylor won the Open at Royal Cinque Ports in Deal.

He began his golf career at the age of 14 as an apprentice to his uncle Andy.

The Whiting family, which from the eight sons produced, seven went on to become golf pros including Charles' father John William.

His career included a stint alongside his uncle Albert at Folkestone Golf Club where he was assistant.

His final years in professional golf were spent at the Folkestone Club, later renamed Sene Valley, where he famously played an exhibition match with the great Sir Henry Cotton.

He stayed at Sene Valley until his retirement in 1980 after 25 years.

PGA captain Jim Farmer visited Charles and presented a special leatherbound copy of the PGA centenary book and a bottle of whisky produced to mark the Association's own 100 years in 2001.
