Eurotunnel and French officials are bidding to make the Strait of Dover a World Heritage Site.

The Channel Tunnel operator is making the bid to UNESCO with the Conseil General of the Pas-de-Calais.

"This is really quite an exceptional proposal," said Eurotunnel spokeswoman Charlotte Brookes.

"It is the first time ever that two countries have put forward a proposal jointly."

Dover MP Gwyn Prosser said he thought the proposal for a World Heritage Site was a wonderful idea.

"As well as the dramatic views of the White Cliffs of Dover from the Strait, it has all the heritage and historical connections," he said.

"The Battle of Britain took place overhead during World War Two."
