The alert was raised around 5.00 pm yesterday evening (29 January) when Police contacted Dover Coastguard to alert the marine emergency service that the man was heading towards the cliffs at St Margaret's Bay near Dover.

Police units with a dog handler were joined by Langdon and Deal Coastguard Rescue Teams and the Dover lifeboat was requested to launch. A shoreline search was made and white parachute flares were launched to illuminate the area.

A military rescue helicopter was also launched which conducted an infra red search both out to sea and across local farmland. The Kent search and rescue team were also involved.

Phil Binks, Dover Coastguard Watch Officer said: "At around 10.00 p.m. this evening a call was made to the Police which brought their attention to a rear garden in Beach Road where a man was found.

"After such a major effort this evening, we are delighted that he has been found safe, although he is very cold and suffering from hypothermia. Fortunately the weather has been fair and dry tonight. He has now been taken to hospital."
