Thumbs up for Lydd Airport after major emergency exercise

Safety procedures at Lydd Airport have been praised by the Civil Aviation Authority following a major emergency simulation exercise.

The scenario saw firefighters scrambled after an aircraft carrying 10 passengers careered off the runway during touch-down and 'hit' an airfield operations vehicle with two people inside.

Back-up was provided by external emergency services, including Kent Police, who sent a specialist critical incident response team and took charge of the airport's Incident Command Centre, liaising with other external emergency services and senior airport management.

The exercise was praised by CAA Aerodrome Inspector Graham Bartlett, who said the successful drill had left the airport team far better prepared to deal with any serious incident in the future.

Recent developments at the airport include the creation of a modern four-bay fire station.
