A Russian-registered cargo ship with 25 people on board, lost 1,500 tonnes of timber after it developed a 15 degree list in rough seas off the East Sussex coast early today (19 January).

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the ship Sinegorsk reported it had lost its cargo about 14 miles off the coast of Newhaven.

The timber, which is being monitored by a coastguard tug is expected to come ashore on the Sussex coast between Brighton and Newhaven but could drift as far as the Kent coast.

In January last year more than 2,000 tonnes of timber was washed up on the Sussex coast after the Greek-registered Ice Prince sank south of Dorset. Planks from the stricken ship were reported on beaches along the Shepway coast and as far as Deal and Thanet.
