A report has revealed crew failure was to blame for the grounding of a passenger ferry carrying almost 400 people.

Pride of Canterbury

The cross-Channel passenger ferry Pride of Canterbury, with 275 passengers and 101 crew on boar, became grounded in severe weather after the crew failed to detect a charted wreck in January 2008 on its journey from Calais to Dover.

According to an official accident report released this week, a paper chart indicating the wreck off Deal in Kent was available on the vessel but "was not referred to at the crucial time".

The wreck was not displayed on the electronic chart being used on the P&O Ferries vessel Pride of Canterbury due to the settings in use at the time.

No one was injured although the ferry suffered severe damage when it grounded, however it continued to Dover unaided.

Bad weather had temporarily closed the port of Dover at the time of the incident.
