A restored Spitfire will be taking to the skies above Hawkinge to commemorate Battle of Britain Day at the weekend.

The aircraft, the ‘Spirit of Kent’ will be giving a display over the former Battle of Britain Airfield at around 3.00pm on Sunday (14 September).

The Battle of Britain is commemorated each year on the 15th September, which in 1940 saw the height of the battle.

The ‘Spirit of Kent’, a restored Spitfire is flown at displays in memory of No 131 ‘County of Kent’ Squadron, a Squadron of Spitfires bought by donations from the people of Kent. Spitfire TA805 originally flew from RAF Hawkinge during September and October 1945.

The Kent Battle of Britain Museum Trust Ltd Charity in Aerodrome Road has the largest and most comprehensive collection of Battle of Britain artefacts on show in the country. It has been open to the public at the Hawkinge site since 1982.

It is open from Easter Friday to 30th September, Tuesdays to Sundays 10am to 4pm (last entry by 3pm). It is closed on Mondays except on Bank Holidays.
