With sunshine hours sadly failing to reach figures that match even the dullest of our English summers, fingers are crossed that the 13th will be lucky with the weather for the Hawkinge event of the year.

Final preparations are being made for the Hawkinge Community Fun Day 2008 which this year celebrates the 40th anniversary of the making of the motion picture ‘The Battle of Britain’.

It will open with a march by The 99 (Folkestone) Squadron, Air Training Corps followed by a reading of Churchill’s 1940 address to the nation, a reading of the Royal British Legion Exaltation and the Kohima Address.

Attractions include a fabulous 1966 former East Kent double decker bus which has been transformed into a museum of 1940’s war torn Britain. You can visit the authentic shop and learn all about provisions and rationing or take a peek at what life may have been like in a typical war time living room.

The Reverend Boogie will be on hand to provide some red hot jive, bunny hop and twist workshops and displays, and the younger kids can bounce about on seven different inflatable activities including a bouncy castle and a gladiator joust.

Chris Johnson, Chair of The Hawkinge Community Events Working Group who has organised the event said, “Many scenes from the Battle of Britain movie were filmed in and around Hawkinge so this is an opportunity for the public to celebrate and pay tribute to this unique piece of history”.

The Fun Day takes place on Saturday 13th September on The Green, Heron Forstal Avenue, Hawkinge between 11.00am and 4.00pm.
