A quick-thinking 85-year-old woman helped nab a burglar who had broken into her home.

The woman pressed her Shepway Lifeline pendant in the early hours of the morning because she noticed that her wheelchair had been moved.

Lifeline staff based at Folkestone immediately called the police and a youth was arrested. He is due to be charged with various burglaries.

Shepway Lifeline offers a 24-hour alarm service through a pendant worn by its customers. When activated, the pendant triggers a call to Lifelife staff who can either alert a named person who can then check on the pendant wearer or, if necessary, call the emergency services.

The 85-year-old, who lives in Broadstairs, said: "The Shepway Lifeline was very useful when it resulted in the capture of a burglar in my house. I would advise anyone who had a pendant to take it to bed as you never know when you will need it."

Cllr Keren Belcourt, Cabinet Member for Housing said: "We know the value of Shepway Lifeline and it has once again played a part in crime prevention. People are beginning to realise the Lifeline Alarm is not just for older people, but is proving an indispensible asset to younger people, shops, hospitals and lone workers."
