A man who raped a young woman in Folkestone escaped justice until his DNA went on a database after police matched his DNA profile during an inquiry into a separate allegation against him.

Kelvin Bennett from the Midlands, yesterday began a 12 year sentence for the attack in December 2000.

He grabbed his 21-year-old victim as she walked from a pub in Folkestone bundled her into his car and raped her three times at remote spots before dumping her in a remote country lane.

Sentencing Bennett at Maidstone Crown Court, Judge Philip Statman said: "This case illustrates every woman's worst fear."
