A man has appeared in court charged with smuggling heroin with an estimated street value of £4.5m into Dover inside three suitcases.

Customs Officers found 220lb of the Class A drug inside luggage stowed in the boot and rear passenger footwell of a French-registered car at Eastern Docks.

HM Revenue and Customs said the car arrived at the docks on a ferry from Dunkirk and its driver was arrested.

The man from Wales, has been charged with attempting to smuggle drugs into the UK following the seizure and appeared at Folkestone Magistrates' Court.
