Bus service is failing passengers

Have your say!

Dear Editor,

Three weeks into the school term, the number 16 bus service from Hawkinge is still unable to cope with the numbers of passengers, mainly school children, trying to get to Canterbury for 9.00am.

Bus services to Canterbury from Hawkinge village are consistently late and frequently arrive too full to take on any more passengers, leaving them at the stop.

My daughter has been late for college several times now, in spite of allowing plenty of time and even trying to get the bus before. As a result I will have to drive her there every day by car.

The bus company say they are "looking into the situation", yet surely it cannot have come as a surprise to them that children go back to school in September.

They also do not seem to think that it is a problem if children are late for school occasionally - what sort of message does that give to our youngsters?

Am I the only irate parent?

Wendy Dowden

Bus overcrowding

This is the first I've heard about any problems this term with the no 16 bus and I've asked the officers at KCC to look into it.

The popularity of the Kent Freedom Pass has been greater than anyone expected and this has led to overcrowding on a couple of rotes.

I'll be back to the Hawkinge Gazette with a response when I know more.

Bus overcrowding - response

I am pleased to report that Stagecoach Buses have now responded to the overcrowding problems on the no. 16.

A relief bus was provided at 8.08 this morning but I suspect that it is a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted as far fewer passengers were at the stop than in previous weeks and the relief bus was empty! Presumably these passengers are driving/being driven by car. What a shame the situation could not have been addressed sooner.
