The construction of a 26-turbine wind farm on Romney Marsh has been  completed.

The final blade on the last turbine of the project which is being developed by npower renewables1 at Little Cheyne Court on Romney Marsh, is now in place.

Commissioning of the turbines begins in October but work will not be completed on the site until spring 2009.

59.8 megawatts of electricity from Little Cheyne Court will be fed into the National Grid via a substation at Appledore and will supply power to around 33,000 homes.

Nuclear compared with wind power

Recently (17 September) British Energy gave a presentation to Shepway District Council. They told us that a single reactor would produce up to 1650 megawatts and have an operational life of 60 years. Dungeness is one of the sites being considered for such a reactor.

What a contrast with the power output from the very large wind turbines on the Marsh of less than 60 megawatts. The wind turbines will also need to be taken down in 20 years time.

We need affordable and secure power sources for the UK, The government has dithered for too long about an energy policy.

British Energy thought they might be able to submit a planning application in 2010 to open a reactor by 2018. Wind power hardly seems likely to fill the gap.
