Environment and sustainability are long words for a 4 year old to grapple with, but that is exactly what pupils at The Churchill School are attempting.

Pupils throughout the year groups at The Churchill School have formed a team of “Eco Warriors” who look at everything to do with the environment, from carbon emissions to local plant and wildlife.

Parent and school representatives known collectively as The Churchill Challenge are working closely with the Kent Wildlife Trust and the Eco Warriors to encourage a variety of types of plant and wildlife to thrive within the school grounds by actively managing a variety of habitats.

The Woodland Trust is kindly donating hedgerows to the school which the children will plant in November. The hedgerows will encourage more birds and insects in to the school grounds, enabling the children to see sustainability in action.

The school has asked hedgerow specialist Vic Harmer of Harmer Landscapes in Acrise to look at expanding the donated hedgerow to provide a substantial habitat for wildlife.

Headteacher Jennie Carter said “Our increasing numbers of children are fascinated by the natural world around them. Being able to bring this into the school grounds is a fantastic opportunity to experience it on a daily basis. Due to the large numbers of children involved, we would welcome more volunteers from the community to help our existing volunteers in a number of areas. These include Gardening, Wildlife, Hedgerows, Pond Life, Wild Flowers, Insects and Bird watching."

For details or to volunteer, please visit, call or email the Headteacher Jennie Carter in school on 013103 893892, email headteacher@churchill-hawkinge.kent.sch.uk
