Police say they have detained a man in Dover who was attempting to board a ferry from the port after a violent stabbing attack in Birmingham that left two women dead.

The two women, both in their early 20s, were found at the flat they shared in Birmingham at about 5.40pm on Monday (15 September).

Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Mirfield said: "Both girls had been subjected to a sustained and violent attack. We believe at at this stage at least one or more weapons had been used."

He told the press conference at West Midlands Police HQ in Birmingham: "This man, we believe, was attempting to board a ferry from Dover. We also believe that the arrested man may be known to the victims."
