Have your say!

Dear Editor,

Re: Searching for parents and grandmother Turton from Hawkinge

I read your article requesting information on the Turtons.

I subscribe to a genealogy website called ancestry.com and found all the answers below from the information on the website.

Unfortunately I have no idea where the remains of Bill's parents are located.

Nevertheless the following might be of use to him, as he could order their death certificates to ascertain their last known address and who was the person that registered his mother's death.

James Gisby and Emily Newing are the parents of Frederick Nutting Gisby.

Frederick was born 1883 in Elham Registration District, and died aged 72 in 1955 within Dover Registration District (certificate number 1955 Q3/Dover/5b/411)

Sarah Jane Swaine married Samuel Turton 1881 in Elham Registration District.(Sarah Jane Swaine is Bill's grandmother that he didn't know the name of.)

She died May 1943 and was buried at Paddlesworth Church 15 May 1943. Paddlesworth Church is right next to old RAF HAWKINGE. The RAF airfield is between Paddlesworth and Hawkinge.

Sarah J. and Samuel had several children, they lived at Peane, next to Cheriton at the bottom of the North Downs, part swallowed up by the channel tunnel complex.

1891 Census shows

Samuel Turton 37 born Nottingham

Sarah Turton 33 born Cheriton, Kent

George 8
Louisa 6
Elizabeth 4
John 2
Annie C 4months – all children born in Cheriton.

Annie Charlotte Turton was born 28 Nov 1889 and died 1981
(certificate reference 1981 Q2 / Dover / 16 / 1089)

She had married Frederick 1911 Q1 (quarter 1 –or Jan/feb/mar) in Dover Registration District.

They had children

Peter J Gisby 1912 Dover
Frederick Henry Gisby 19 Oct 1913 Elham reg. Dist. / died Nov 2005 Kent
Edith A Gisby 1915 Elham reg. Dist.
Ethel M Gisby 1917 Dover reg dist
Caroline L Gisby 1921 Dover reg. Dist
James T W Gisby 3 Feb 1926 d. March 2004 Kent
William J Gisby 1929 Q4 ** this would be Bill**
George R Gisby 1932 Q2

I am not related to the Gisbys or Turtons, but had a couple of hours to spare, and am used to researching such things.

Best wishes

Lee
