It is understood that the Ministry of Defence has been buying properties in Hawkinge to house Ghurkha families.

A reliable source told the Hawkinge Gazette that sixty seven homes have so far been purchased.

Already a number of families from the Gurkha community have moved into their new properties.

A number have been seeking help from the Hawkinge Partnership and it is looking at ways to help the new residents.

Gurkhas are known for their history of bravery and strength and have fought on the British side since the Indian Rebellion of 1857 when they became part of the British Indian Army.
