Rescue crews rushed to the scene of a major accident after a number of vehicles were involved in a pile-up between the Roundhill Tunnel and Court Wood interchange at 1.20pm today on the coastbound carriageway of the A20.

The incident happened in thick fog and access roads were closed off to enable emergency vehicles to reach the scene.

Fire crews from Folkestone, Dover and Ashford used hydraulic rescue equipment to free a man and a woman.

A spokeswoman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said three ambulances, an officer, a doctor and an air ambulance crew were at the scene.

The driver of a car which collided with the back of a foreign-registered heavy goods vehicle sustained serious injuries.

The front passenger sustained minor injuries while a second passenger was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The driver of another car which also collided with a foreign-registered heavy goods vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Minor incidents were reported in the tailback but there were no serious injuries.

Police said they believed that two cars and two foreign-registered lorries were among the vehicles involved in the crash.

Up to 10 vehicles were damaged in the incident.

Both the coastbound A20 and M20 were closed and drivers were advised to avoid the area.  The road re-opened at 5.30pm.
