Inspired to walk 3,500 miles for my Gwen

Andy Monk who runs the This is Folkestone website is hoping to raise lots of vital cash for MS charities by trekking 3,500 around the country.

He said: "I am planning a sponsored walk to every Newspaper office and Radio Station in England, about 3,500 miles all told, to raise crucial funds for two Multiple Sclerosis Charities - The Accelerated Cure Project, and The British Trust for the Myelin Project.

"I have witnessed the frightening and devastating effects that MS has had on my wife Gwen, who fifteen years ago, at the age of 32, was stricken by the disorder. I have watched a fit, healthy, young woman gradually being forced to come to terms with a fearfully debilitating illness.

"Gwen and I have known each other since we were fifteen years old, and my heart breaks every time the MS renders her a little more disabled. I asked her on our 25th wedding anniversary that if there was anything in the World she could have, what would it be; she said that she just wanted to be able to walk properly again.

"I believe that one day this will happen, and that is what inspires me to walk these 3,500 miles for her."

Andy has already completed a 1000 mile walk from his home town of Bury, Lancashire, following the route his father took with the 7th Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), 52nd Lowland Division, sixty years earlier during WW2. He walked through Belgium and Holland, and finished in Bremen in Northern Germany.

In total the walk raised £9,079.30 and 1,150.50 Euros for the Myelin Project and The Accelerated Cure Project.

Andy said: "I hope to surpass this amount during the course of the next 3500 miles and beyond."
