Oil price forces Channel ferry price hike

Fast ferry operator SpeedFerries has told its customers that the price of a crossing between Dover and Boulogne will increase next month.

And all Channel ferry passengers could soon be asked to pay a fuel surcharge because of the rising cost of oil.

Major ferry operator, P&O, whose routes include Dover to Calais, will try to absorb the cost but another operator, DFDS has decided to withdraw its Newcastle to Norway service completely.

The difficulties hitting ferry companies come as airlines start scrapping flights and grounding planes because of the increasing cost of aviation fuel.

Long-established expansion plans are being put on hold as the industry comes to terms with the almost daily rise in the cost of oil.
