Garden waste recycling days will give the answers

Have you ever wondered what happens to your recycled garden waste?

A series of special days to answer questions about home composting and to give gardeners an opportunity to buy 50 litre bags of soil improver at a specially reduced price is being held  by Dover District Council in partnership with Kent County Council.

The soil improver will be on sale at two locations in the district. Each bag will cost £2.00 (normally £2.50) or three bags for £5.00, with a maximum of six bags per vehicle – while stocks last.

The special days will be held at the following locations:

• Saturday 31st May, 10am – 2pm (or while stocks last)
at Southwall Road (Deal) Household Waste Recycling Centre
• Saturday 7th June, 10am – 2pm (or while stocks last)
at Whitfield Household Waste Recycling Centre

The green waste kerbside collection scheme was launched in August 2005, and is available to approximately 22,000 properties in the district. Since the scheme was launched, over six and a half thousand tonnes of green waste have been recycled into soil improver. In addition, the green garden waste accepted at the Household Waste Recycling Centres is composted in the same way.

In partnership with WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), Kent residents are able to buy reduced cost compost bins from just £17 including delivery. A selection of compost bins, wormeries and food waste digesters will be on display over the two days.

Mandy Pile, DDC Waste Services Officer, said: “The soil improver days are a big success year after year, and we are looking forward to two very busy days. It’s a great opportunity to buy back garden waste that is recycled and composted in Kent, a fantastic example of closed loop recycling, and compost advisors will be on hand to discuss any issues that anyone may have regarding home composting.”
