The first of 26 giant turbines is on its way to the Romney Marsh wind farm at Little Cheyne Court.

It is expected to arrive in mid June and will tower more than 300 feet above the marsh, being visible from Folkestone.

Deliveries, which will also include a large transformer, are scheduled to begin in early June and will be managed in consultation with the police and local authorities to minimise disruption to local traffic.

Once fully up and running, the wind farm, which is being developed by Npower Renewables, will generate clean electricity equivalent to the annual electricity demand of three quarters of the homes in the Shepway District Council area.

"We are very excited to be reaching this landmark in the development of what will be the most powerful onshore wind farm in south east England," said project manager Martin Kelly.

The erection of the turbines follows some eight months of preparatory work on site.

All turbines are expected to be assembled by the autumn with the wind farm fully operational early next year.
