Medical problems have sunk record breaking American channel swimmer and regular Hawkinge and Folkestone visitor Peter Jurzynski from improving on his US record of successful channel swims this year.

The popular American who is regularly seen here during the summer months told the Gazette that he was "facing a bit of a heart challenge."

He explained: "I had my channel swim medical in January but when I picked up training in April I experienced chest pains.

"After numerous tests and consulting three cardiologists, I have learned that I have blockages in three arteries."

He is due to go into hospital tomorrow (23 May).

He said: "I will be receiving a cardiac catheterization at Yale, New Haven Hospital in Connecticut  but the possibly of a useful cardiac angioplasty is only 25% and I am tentatively slated for heart bypass surgery on May 28.

"The good news is my heart is fine from all the swimming off Folkestone yet my arteries need repair."

But an upbeat Peter still plans to visit Folkestone later this summer and his Doctor has said he can do another channel swim in 2009.

"Being an athlete makes me aware of pains, swimming improved my heart, hereditary and diet likely caused my blockage but be assured when I visit later this year, I will stop in a pub for a glass or two of red wine."

Peter joked: "By the way next week, Tony Blair and I will be in the same University, but in my case the hospital part."
