Kent Police’s new ‘eye in the sky’ has been hailed as a success after just one month of operation.

The force has been able to use the Essex Police’s helicopter since the beginning of April and in the first month it has flown over the county for around 25 hours. and in the first month it has flown over the county for around 25 hours.

One if its first jobs was in Halstead searching for burglary suspects. The offenders were successfully tracked down and the stolen items recovered.
It has also filmed evidence of cannabis cultivation in Ashford, surveyed fans at a football match in Gillingham after reports of pre-arranged violence, and located hare coursing suspects.

Michael Fuller, Kent Police’s Chief Constable, said: “These are excellent examples of how the aircraft can be used to either support officers or gather evidence to assist an investigation. This agreement is fantastic news for Kent Police and our public, as we can use the helicopter in many ways to reduce crime, nuisance and disorder.”

The deal means Kent has access to the helicopter for 20 hours a day, seven days a week.

It has come about following an agreement between the forces to work more closely together in April last year.

Kent Police has insisted it has no intention of merging with its northern neighbour.
