A 70 year-old man and woman of 37, from Dover, have drowned off the coast of Goa in southern India on Sunday, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Stanley Horne and Liesel Clare Smith died at the resort of Morjim, a spokesman said.

Mr Horne, had been living in Goa for four years, and Ms Smith was on holiday visiting him. They met while working as nurses at St Saviour's Hospital in Hythe.

It is believed they drowned after Ms Smith got into difficulties while swimming and Mr Horne tried to rescue her.

The bodies will be flown back to the UK after post-mortem examinations.
