Former teacher, Gareth Thomas, from Folkestone, is to walk  1300 miles – over a traditional Catholic pilgrimage to Compestela in Spain - raising funds to support disabled children’s mobility in the UK.

He took the decision to leave his job as a secondary school teacher to explore a vocation in the Catholic priesthood and aims to raise £10,000 for children’s mobility charity Whizz-Kidz, over three months of trekking.

Gareth will begin his fundraising walk from Westminster Cathedral on 12 May, after receiving his pilgrims blessing, and follow the medieval route through France and across to Spain.

The funds he collects will provide many more children with vital mobility equipment, wheelchair skills training and support, that will allow them independence to lead fuller lives as they grow.

Gareth hopes to finish his walk on 1 August.
