The Folkestone Academy sponsored by former Saga Chairman, Roger De Haan, is battling against a public toilet in Gravesend to become the best building in Britain.

The thirty-eight million pound Academy has been shortlisted for the best new building in Britain award by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Amongst others, it is up against the £300,000 futuristic toilet block in Gravesend which features a triangle roof and Chelsea Football Club’s new training ground in Surrey.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in June.

Last year, Roger De Haan's Marlowe Academy in Ramsgate, designed by the Building Design Partnership, won the inaugural RIBA Sorrell Foundation Schools Award.
