Local residents can have their say over a possible new nuclear reactor at Dungeness tonight (16 April) at a public meeting in Lydd arranged by British Energy, owner and operator of Dungeness B power station.

The company have called the meeting starting at 6.30pm in the Lydd War Memorial Institute, Station Road, Lydd TN29 9EB to discuss preparation for a new building, the site selection process across the UK, and recent government consultation. British Energy have said they want to keep people informed on the process and hear views on the impact of the proposals.

The plans have had a mixed response from local residents with some welcoming the possibility of an economic boost to the area and others opposing the use of nuclear energy.

British Energy is assessing a number of UK sites, including Dungeness.

The Dungeness A site started generating electricity in 1965 and ceased in 2006. The Dungeness B site will stay open until 2010.

It is believed sites of decommissioned stations, including Dungeness A, would be likely to house any new reactors.
